Culture Night Kerry – What will you see?

“Kerry serves up a cultural feast across the County”, stated Kate Kennelly at the National Launch of Culture Night at Dublin Castle on Wednesday 17th August 2011

The towns of Listowel, Tralee, Killarney, Scartaglen, Kenmare, Dingle and Waterville are the places to be in Kerry for this year’s Culture Night celebrations. Locals and visitors alike will be offered a free cultural feast of arts events and entertainment on the evening of Friday 23rd September next.

launch photoThe fourth Friday in September marks the annual Culture Night celebrations, whereby arts and cultural organisations open their doors offering free events and entertainment at key venues and centres across the island of Ireland. Kerry serves up a wide mix of free events this year and builds on the success of last year’s Culture Night which saw very significant numbers of people access events across the County.

“Its an open door policy, a free showcase of local and visiting arts acts…and a huge value for money offering for the public…it is a chance to celebrate our culture at no cost to anyone in these tough recessionary times’, stated Kate Kennelly, County Arts Officer and organiser in association with key venues and arts groups behind this year’s celebrations in the County.  ‘It is great to see so many organisations and venues taking this opportunity to welcome in new audiences and maybe new practitioners!’, Kate went on to say.

In Killarney at the Department of Arts, Heritage and the Gaeltacht an exhibition celebrating the life and times of Killarney Native Monsignor Hugh O’Flaherty’s humanitarian works during World War 2 will take place accompanied by a live theatre performance by Blewdoor titled ‘The Man We Knew’. At the same time a Big Open Drum Circle staged by Drum Dance Ireland will be taking place at The Malton Hotel – in an attempt to get the biggest and longest lasting drum circle going that Kerry has ever seen. The KDYS in Killarney will host youth arts based entertainment featuring the KDYS Band Project, The KDYS Circus School, and the Ardshan Jump Force.

St. John’s Theatre & Arts Centre in Listowel will feature an evening of drama, music, storytelling and film and has places for 140 people plus. Kerry County Museum in Tralee host the Sliabh Mish Branch of Comhaltas Ceoltόirí Éireann as well as offering visitors the chance to explore the treasures on display. Comhaltas Ceoltόirí Éireann feature widely across the programme. Quills Farmhouse at Muckross Traditional Farms hosts a rambling house featuring musicians from the Killarney School of Music. Bean An Tí for the evening at the Rambling House in the Sliabh Luachra Heritage Centre in Scartaglen will be Bridie Garvey leading the songs, tunes and stories.
Original Kerry serves up a menu of master crafters at work under the fairy lights at the Goose Island Workshop in Castlegregory with a Kerry Craft Trails bus tour leaving Tralee for the event. At the same time Original Kerry is hosting Craft Demonstrations at New Market Lane in Killarney in association with the Backlane Gallery.

Is iad bailte Lios Tuathail, Cill Airne, Scairteach an Ghlinne, Neidín, An Daingean agus An Coireán croí na ceiliúrtha ag Oíche Chultúrtha na bliana seo. Cuirfear féasta cultúrtha d’imeachtaí ealaíon agus siamsaíochta ar fáil do mhuintir na háite agus do chuairteoirí araon saor in aisce ar oíche speisialta amháin, sé sin an Aoine 23 Meán Fómhair seo chugainn.

Beidh oíche dhrámaíochta, cheoil, sheanchais agus scannán ar siúl in Amharchlann & Ionad Cultúrtha Naomh Eoin ina bhfuil spás do bhreis agus140 duine. Ag Músaem Chontae Ciarraí i dTrá Lí beidh Brainse Shliabh Mis de Chomhaltas Ceoltóirí Éireann mar aon le seans do chuairteoirí na taiscí ar taispeáint a fheiceáil.
