Hugh O’Flaherty Documentary: In 2009, TG4 commisioned and screened a documentary on the life of Monsignor Hugh O'Flaherty titled, "Pimpernel sa Vatican". It was edited and produced by the Monsignor's grand niece, Catherine O'Flaherty and was widely acclaimed. This documentary will be screened in the lobby of the Department to add further detail to the exhibition.
Drama “The Man we Knew” by Blewdoor Productions:
This production was written by Blewdoor for the Monsignor Hugh O’Flaherty Humanitarian Award Ceremony in Killarney in 2010. The piece is premised on 3 individuals who all meet at a bus stop in Killarney. As chance would have it, a simple asking of directions to Caherciveen by a stranger, leads to the portrayal of all three characters, unknowing to themselves, being acquainted with the Monsignor in Rome during World War 2. The piece sees the three individuals recalling their own experiences and association with the Monsignor and their memories of him. The characters include:
- Sr. Noreen Dennehy (played by Niamh Burns) – A Franciscan Nun originally from Kerry. She worked as a Sister in a Convent in Rome during WW2. At the request of Monsignor O’Flaherty the Nuns bravely housed and hid Jewish refugees from the German occupiers.
- Bill Vincent (played by Denis Earlie) - of the Muckross Estate family Killarney. During the War he was a Captain with the Inniskilling Fusiliers. Was wounded and ended up in hospital in Rome where he met O’Flaherty who brought him around the sights of Rome.
- Private Norman Anderson (played by Michael Mills) - Cameron Highlander. Escaped from POW camp and spent winter 1943 in Subiaco where he got appendicitis. He owed the saving of his life to a number of people in O’Flaherty’s organisation, who all risked theirs to save his.
